Outdoor Living: How To Make Your Yard Into An Outdoor Living Space
It’s officially summer here in Western Massachusetts. SO, of course you want to sit outside when it’s nice out! AND when the weather is warm, your patio, deck, or backyard can easily be the most comfortable place to host friends or to just spend the day relaxing alone! BUT, you may need to swap out that old rusty grill and those folding chairs for something a bit more eye-catching. It is called outdoor LIVING, after all.
Don’t worry! It doesn’t have to be a huge renovation project or really expensive! You could even hire us to do the whole thing for you! There are a few simple things that you can do to your outside area that will make it so much more comfortable and inviting!
1. CLEAN
I know it sounds strange to clean outside. BUT, think about it! Who wants to sit on a dusty, moldy deck? It only takes a couple of minutes to get out that pressure washer. Trust me, a pressure washer, outdoor cleaner and an old rag do wonders.
2. GROUP THINGS TOGETHER
The fancy term for this is “vignettes”. It makes for a focal point within an area. All you have to do is group together your outdoor furniture and planters to create a usable space. For example, you could add a hammock or a swing to a shady area of your yard, along with some planters and a small table. OR if you have a horseshoe pit or trampoline, add a small table and two chairs with a pot of flowers on it. It makes the space more usable and gives you a place to settle in with a drink or snack.
Adirondack chairs and a small table near the swing set can make watching your kids so much more relaxing. Depending on the size of your deck or yard, you could create multiple areas that you and your family and friends could use. Think about what areas you use the most inside your home, and then aim to recreate those outside! Like in the picture above and below!
3. BRING THE INDOORS OUT
We always talk about bringing the outdoors inside, with plants and texture. BUT it works both ways! To make your outdoor space more functional and comfortable, add some outdoor pillows, candles or twinkle lights, speakers for some music, plants and maybe even an outdoor rug or ceiling fan! A canopy or some type of shade is always nice when the sun is hot!
The main goal is to make your outdoor area just as comfortable and cozy as your indoor area!
