How to Get The Transitional Look - Details Full Service Interiors - Monson Interior Decorating

Transitional is a word that gets thrown around a lot in the design world.
But what exactly is it?
It’s a term that refers to a style that bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary. I think of it as kind of an updated traditional.
Transitional style is the most common design style that my clients ask for lately.
It’s also perfect for couples that have two different design aesthetics. You can do transitional design and meld their styles.

I love to implement a transitional design because it’s a mix.
And to me that’s the best style, a mix.
Having all one particular style can end up looking really one-dimensional and even a little boring.
You have to live in your home right?
It should be comfortable and personal.
It should be YOU. And nobody is just one-dimensional. So let’s mix up your home too. Let’s add some personality.

There are simple ways to get a transitional style.

Here are some tips for how you can achieve this look in your home, room by room.

Dining room

Use a dining table and chairs that have a sleek, clean line, but upholster the chairs in a traditional fabric. Or, use traditional furnishings and offset them with modern lighting, such as a modern industrial chandelier. Like the one from Uttermost below

Bedroom:

Use a traditional, upholstered headboard in a modern fabric. Or choose modern nightstands to go next to a traditional headboard. Then you have the option of using a traditional table lamp or sleek modern lamps.

Kitchen

If you have traditional kitchen cabinets that you don’t want to replace, go modern with your lighting and your accessories. Go with contemporary pendant lights over your island.  New countertops, in quartz or concrete can also add a contemporary look to an otherwise traditional kitchen. And, of course, painting your cabinets is always an option.

Bathroom

If you have a traditional claw foot tub, go with a more modern floor tile. Swap out your shower curtain for more modern glass shower doors. Lighten up the space with a new vanity or change out the lighting to a more modern fixture.

Living Room

For your sofa choose the shape of a rolled arm, but a sleeker version, which is a sock arm. Or, if you have more traditional elements in the room go with a simple track arm sofa.

For your coffee and end tables choose a clean, simple line.
Keep your window treatments, art and accessories simple and minimal, just not so minimal that you get a contemporary look.

For the average homeowner, achieving a transitional design on their own is difficult. That’s where a designer comes in.
Most designers just have a knack for being able to mix styles together and have it come out as a beautiful cohesive room.
