How to Freshen Up Your Home
When the Holidays are Over
I wanted to share some of my favorite things to add to my home during this cold, dark season (that I loathe) called winter. A new year calls for new decor! Or at least fresh decor! Does your home feel barren after all your holiday stuff is gone? That’s usually what happens. We’re not quite ready for Spring decorating yet, so we need to do something in between New Years and Spring! You want to keep your home feeling like it’s winter time, but not feel like Christmas. How do you do it? Well, I thought I’d put together a bunch of ways to get a nice fresh, wintry feeling in your home.
The first thing to add is some fresh flowers. Do you have a nice vase that’s been hidden away waiting for the perfect bouquet to put in it? Get it out! If not, head to your go-to store and buy a fun new one. Go to the grocery store and grab a nice bouquet of fresh flowers. Having flowers in your home will make it feel fresh and happy. What’s one thing everyone needs more of in winter? (At least I do) Happiness! The cold, snow and dark skies are enough to put anyone down in the dumps. Flowers just make it better.
The second idea is warm throws. I know we talked about this for fall, but you can either switch them up for some new throws or add more! There should be enough for everyone to snuggle up with when hanging around and watching TV. Try wool, flannel, sherpa or faux fur! Drape them over the backs of chairs, the back of a sofa, or put them in a basket next to your fireplace. Just seeing them will give you a warm, cozy feeling.
The third suggestion is to add heavier throw pillows or swap out pillow covers. This is along the same line as the throws. Try adding some faux fur, or even a woven patterned material. They will not only feel warm, they’ll add a nice design and accent to your home. Don’t forget to remove any other pillows that may compete with the new one. Just like adding Christmas decorations, you need to swap things out instead of just adding more to avoid it becoming too busy or not coordinating.
My fourth tip is white decor. Not sure what color to decorate with in winter? WHITE! Snowy white is the perfect color to bring in. It feels crisp and clean. White also goes well with just about everything. What better color to use when you’re trying to freshen up? White tablecloths, white throws, white vases with some sticks from your yard. It will bring the outside in and feel nice and fresh.
Fifth, bring in some wood accents to warm it up. White and wood go so well together! Wood will warm up any space and it also adds lots of natural texture. Try some wooden candlesticks, a wooden vase, a tray, or even a woven basket to add some warmth. You can even hang some woven baskets on your wall! They can make a nice accent to a wall when bunched together over a sofa or on a blank wall. Or, if you have a wall shelf, lean one basket on it against the wall. It will add some warmth and interest to the arrangement. They will also carry over into other seasons! Just change out the decor in and around them.
The sixth tip is candles! They can be real candles or flameless. I actually really like the flameless ones. Some of them you can set on a timer and they’ll come on when it starts to get dark and stay on for 8 or so hours. That way you don’t have to worry about them. They look nice on some wooden candlesticks like I mentioned above, or as a tablescape arrangement. White candles are great for winter, and they add their own warmth (for obvious reasons). Bunch an odd number of them together in all different sizes to add interest.
Last but not least, add some plants!! Just like fresh flowers, plants have a way of making your home feel fresh, clean and happy! If you enjoy taking care of houseplants, now is the time to pick up a new one. If not, head over to Home Goods and get a faux plant. Even if they’re not real, they will still add a sense of freshness and life to your home during the winter. They’re also a reminder that Spring is right around the corner. If you’re brave enough to get a real one, be sure to get a nice pot and plant stand to put it in. That’s half of the fun because you can really make a statement with a pretty potted plant. It becomes a part of your decor, not just a plant.
Hopefully these ideas give you some inspiration to go and freshen up your home this season! Have fun with it and use things that you love and that bring out your personality. Your home should feel like YOU! I don’t know about you, but when it’s cold and dark outside, I want to feel warm, cozy and happy in my home. Do you have some favorite things to decorate with in the winter time? If so, share them in the comments! Thanks for reading!
Thanks for some great tips, Melissa, and I am with you on the flameless candles! They are a much safer alternative, especially for those who have cats and dogs and small children around. There are a lot of different varieties out there, too.. make sure you get the ones where the actual flame itself, flickers, and where the outside is made of real wax. They look so real, you cannot tell that they are not from a distance.
Yes! Those are the best. They add a nice touch of ambiance!
Great ideas! After the holidays our homes can look a bit drab. Love the idea of flowers and heavier textiles.
Thanks! Flowers always make me happy!
Great list, Wendy! I agree with Leslie – love the flameless candles for safety, but you’ve got to have really good ones. Flowers from the grocery store, and plants…even good faux ones, always make me happy and fill the drab days of winter with some cheer, and I would not be without my faux fur throw during the arctic months!
Thank you Janet! They can really make a difference!
Great tips. I love the idea of soft throws and pillows of different textures, candles and plants. And, fresh flowers are always a treat any time!
Thanks Mary Ann! Flowers are the best. I put them in every room!
Great tips Wendy! I am a HUGE fan of flameless candles that are on a timer. I like how you can ‘set it and forget it’. The glowing candles sure add warmth to any space.
And of course, fresh flowers are a great way to add a pop of color to any space.
Thanks for all of your tips.
Thank you Sheri! I have two flameless candles on my fireplace mantel right now and every day they turn on when it starts to get dark, and go off just before I head to bed! It’s perfect!
Great tips! You do bring up some really great ideas! Thank you for sharing your tips.
Thanks so much Joshua! Glad you enjoyed them!
