Beachy style seems to be a popular style for people’s homes lately.
I think it’s because it reminds you of being on vacation.
If you have that beachy feel in your home it can feel like you’re on vacation year round.
Who doesn’t want that relaxed vacation feeling all the time?
The KEY to getting that beachy style in your home without it being tacky and out of place is to not go literal beach.
You don’t have to have bowls of shells, shell pillows, shell art, shell draperies, etc.
You can be beachy without being BEACH.
Go coastal with your décor.
Here’s how you can get a beachy feel in your home.

Let the colors of the beach inspire you.
Go with a warm sandy beige wall color.
And use pale aquas and whites on your upholstered pieces.
Go with a pale aqua wall color.
And use washed out, soft colors on your upholstered pieces.
Think of the colors at your favorite beach and try to use those in your space

Use reclaimed wood and whitewashing
Reclaimed wood has that washed by the ocean feel, like driftwood.
You can have a reclaimed wood mantle. You can use a whitewashed wood coffee table or bed, like the reclaimed wood coffee table below from Pottery Barn.
Whitewashing brick or wood gives it that soft look like you’d have at a beach house.
You can whitewash brick fireplaces for a softer look.
You can even whitewash old hardwood floors.

Use casual furniture pieces
Everything is just a little more casual at the beach.
You can get that feeling by using slip covered upholstered pieces, like the sofa below from Pottery Barn.
Plus, slipcovers can be removed and washed. That’s a plus.
Simplicity in the lines of the furniture makes it feel more casual as well.
Wicker and rattan are classic, casual, beachy furniture. Use them inside for a beachy look.
Like the chairs below from FamilyandTheLakehouse.com
Don’t go too fussy or intricate with your furniture.
Keep it simple for a casual look.

Keep everything light and bright
Keeping everything light and bright helps it feel beachy.
Go with light colors, even white, on the walls.
Use light colors on your upholstered pieces, linen or white canvas, or even washed denim.
And keep the wood finishes light, pale, washed or even white.

Use warm textures
You can use natural fiber area rugs, like sea grass or jute, like the ones below from Pottery Barn.
As I mentioned above, you can use reclaimed wood or driftwood.
Adding cozy, neutral throws adds texture and warmth.
Rope is a classic nautical item that can be incorporated on lampshades or even as drawer pulls.
Again, wicker and rattan furniture are great for a beachy feel and they have texture.

Use navy blue and white
If you aren’t a fan of the washed out natural look you can go with a navy and white palette.
Navy blue and white are classic nautical colors.
Simply going with a navy and white color scheme automatically makes you think beach.
You can do navy and white horizontal stripes on the walls.
You can use navy and white bedding, like this Belgian linen set from PB.

You can go with white walls and use navy furniture.

Use nautical pieces
You can use nautical accessories in your home, but think outside of the box.
Use an old propeller as an accessory on a shelf.
Use balls of rope in a bowl on your table.
Hang a couple of oars horizontally over a bed.

I’m not saying that you can’t have a bowl of shells, a photo of the ocean, or a jar of sand.
I’m just saying that it doesn’t have to be so literal and you don’t need 5 of those.
You can get a beachy vibe without showing the actual beach.
I AM saying though that if you don’t live anywhere near the beach, having bowls of shells, shell curtains, etc. looks a little out of place.

If you are lucky enough to live near the beach you can get away with beachier décor.
You CAN have bowls of shells from the local beach.
You CAN have some oars over your bed.
You CAN hang a surfboard in your hallway, all without it looking out of place.

But if you don’t live near the beach, go for more of a light, beachy feel instead of decorating with the beach.
