Easy Ideas for an Awesome Outdoor Living Space
How to Make Your Yard Your Favorite Room!
It’s a warm evening. There’s a beautiful breeze. You’re looking forward to enjoying your dinner outside on your beautiful patio. Screeeeeeeech…
Wait a minute!
You just remembered that your patio consists of an old, rusty grill and a couple of folding chairs!
Don’t fret!
I have some EASY ideas to make your patio, and the rest of your yard, your favorite space to hang out.
When the weather is warm, your patio, deck or backyard can easily be the most comfortable “room in your home”.
There are a few simple things that you can do to your outside area that will make it comfortable and inviting.
- Clean it
The first thing you need to do, to make any outdoor living space awesome, is clean it.
Who wants to sit on a dusty, moldy deck?
Get out the pressure washer, some outdoor cleaner and a brush, and go to town.
Wash the heck out of the deck, patio and any outdoor furniture you have.
You’ll be amazed at how much a good cleaning can improve your outdoor space.
(Be careful with the pressure washer and only use it for items that it won’t damage.)
- Create Vignettes.
Don’t panic.
Vignette is just a fancy word for a group of objects that create a focal point.
So, when I say create vignettes in your yard, or on your deck or patio,, I mean add groups of furniture and planters to create useable spaces.
You could add a hammock or swing to a shady area of your yard. But, be sure to add a couple of pots of plants and a small table, in order to create a vignette and make it look intentional.
Maybe you have a horseshoe pit or a trampoline. Add a small table and two chairs with a pot of flowers on it in order to create a vignette and a more useable area. You’ll have a spot to rest and a place to put your drink down.
Or, add a couple of adirondack chairs next to your swing set for moms to sit on while kids are swinging.
Place a small table between them, add a pot of flowers, and you have a vignette!
You can do the same on your deck or patio, create vignettes.
Depending on the size of your deck or patio, you could create multiple areas that you and your family and friends
will use.
At my own home, my husband built an oversized deck.
It definitely had to be broken up into areas. We have a bar area, an eating area and a firepit area.
What areas would your family use? Those are the areas you need to create in your yard or on your deck or patio.

- Bring the indoors out
In interior design we always talk about bringing the outdoors in.
But, for your outdoor spaces you want to bring the indoors out in order to make it comfortable and functional.
Add pillows in outdoor fabric.
Add candles for light and ambiance. You can even remove the bulbs from an old chandelier and add candles.
Add a ceiling fan.
Add some outdoor speakers so you can enjoy your favorite music outside.
You can even add outdoor safe art to the wall of your house.
Add an outdoor area rug under your dining area or seating area.
The bottom line is to make your outdoor area just as comfortable and cozy as your indoor area.
