DIY One Day Room Makeover

The Most Fun You’ll Have in One Day!

One of my favorite services is the One Day Room Makeover.
I love going into a client’s home, working with what they have, maybe adding some new items and seeing a fantastic outcome, all in a few hours.
It’s so fun!

But, did you know that you could give your living or family room a One Day
Makeover yourself?
Yup, it’s easy!

1. Empty out the room
You can leave the larger pieces of furniture and area rug.
But, other than that take everything out. Take out the occasional tables, the accessories, the lamps, everything, including the wall art.
You need a blank slate to start with.
Plus, most of you have added items here and there and have left them and gotten used to them, and actually forgotten that they’re there.  You know when someone gave you that framed picture of them in the purple frame? You popped it up on the shelf and then forgot that it was there?
You need a blank slate to start your room makeover, just like if you get a beauty makeover. They remove your makeup before applying new makeup.

2. Arrange the large furniture
Figure out what the focal point of the room is.
Is it the fireplace?
Is it the TV?
Is it a window with a great view?
Whatever it is you want your furniture focused on that.
Face your sofa to that focal point.

Next move your area rug so that it’s centered on your sofa and the edge is at least under the front legs of the sofa, if not further under.

3. Add in the smaller furniture
Now it’s time to add in the smaller pieces of furniture like side chairs and side tables.
Your chairs should be close enough to the sofa so that you can have a conversation while seated on them without yelling.
If you’re adding a chair in a corner, for, say, reading, then be sure to add a chair or two near your sofa as well.
Center your coffee table on your sofa, at least 18” from the front of your sofa, but you can move it out a bit so that it accommodates the side chair(s) as well.
Add small side tables so that every seat in the room has a place to put down a drink. You should be able to reach to some table from every seat in the room.

4. Add lamps
Yes, every room needs at least one lamp.
It’s important to have lamps in addition to overhead lighting, both for additional light, and for ambience.
Add a floor lamp next to your sofa or side chair where there isn’t an end table.
Add a table lamp or two to your end tables.
Lamps are a great way to add personality, fun and a little bling to a room.

5. Accessories!
Now it’s time for the fun part – accessories.
Go through what you’ve removed.
Be tough!
Choose ONLY the items you love.
You don’t need everything.
You need to edit.

Display items in odd numbers, say 3 or 5.
Display like items together.
If you collect bells, group them all together instead of spreading them around the room.

Use a tray on your coffee table to ground the display. Add 3 items that differ in height and size.

Add some fluffy, colorful throw pillows to your chairs and sofa.

Use wall art to fill up large empty wall space.
You don’t have to fill up all wall space.
But you do need to use either larger pieces of art or smaller pieces grouped together to give the look of a larger piece.

When you’re adding the accessories in be sure to spread color around the room.
If you’re using blue as an accent, be sure to add it in at least 3 places, maybe a throw pillow, a vase and a picture. And disperse the pieces evenly in the room. You don’t want blue only on one side of the room and none on the other.

That’s it.
Easy Peasy!

Now step back, take a look at the space.
Does it look good?
Is there the appropriate space between pieces?
Can you walk around comfortably?
Does the art look right?
Is the color dispersed?

Sit down on the furniture and look around.
How does it feel?
Can you see the focal point?
Can you talk to people on the other furniture comfortably?
Do you have enough seating?

If you answered Yes to all then you’re done.
If you answered No to any, then go back and tweak what you need to.

There should be ‘stuff’ left in the pile of what you emptied out of the room.
If there isn’t then you may not have edited enough.

You’ve done it!
You’ve completed a One Day Room Makeover!
