Creating an Updated, Cozy, Double Duty
Family Room/Office on a Budget!

You want a cozy, updated family room.
You need a home office area that functions.
Your room is SO 90’s!
But, you’re going to be moving in a few years so you don’t want to break the bank.
So what do you do?
How do you create a warm, updated family room that is also your home office on a budget?

A couple of weeks ago I got the greatest compliment ever!
One of my clients texted me the following –
“I love this room for the first time in 17 years of living here.”
That right there is my goal!
And, frankly, it should be your goal too.
But, how do you get there?

It’s not that hard.
And it doesn’t have to be that expensive.

This is what that client’s room looked like when we got started.

But, like so many people, she didn’t want to spend a ton on the room because she and her husband only had one child left at home and were planning on moving once he left for college.

But, just because you won’t be there long and you don’t want to spend thousands, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the family room you’re living with right now.

I assured her that I could whip that room into shape and have her the room both comfortable and functional, in budget.

Here’s what she needed, besides an update. She definitely needed an update!
Part of the room needed to function as her office.
The other part of the room needed to be a comfortable sitting area for reading and relaxing.

Easy right?

The bones of the room were good. In order to save money, we decided to keep the sitting area furniture. But, in order to do that, I had to work with the red of the chairs.

We removed the red draperies and replaced them with woven shades and simple, inexpensive, light panels.

I arranged the furniture away from the windows to let all the light in.

And, I positioned a new desk facing into the room so that she could use the window area as more office storage.

We swapped out the dated, dark area rugs for light and airy feeling, cozy rugs that look like a big sweater. They brightened up the space and made it feel warm at the same time.

Next we added a couple of pops of red in other areas of the room so that the chairs wouldn’t look out of place. It was inexpensive to do this with accessories. I added red hydrangeas in a bowl, a couple of throw pillows with red and a plate with red to the bookshelves.

We added a new ottoman coffee table and an end table.

Lastly I arranged some new accessories, mixed with the old favorites, neatly on the built ins.

And Voila! Just like that she had a new space that felt fresh, but still cozy and functional.

In summary, we purchased 2 area rugs, roman shades, inexpensive window panels, a new desk and chair, a new ottoman coffee table, an end table and some new accessories to mix with the old.

This was a large room, really 2 rooms in one. And, for under $2500, we created a warm, functional, cozy, bright space for her to work in and her family to relax in.

You don’t have to go crazy and totally refurnish a room to get a new space.
You can refresh what you have and add a few new pieces and get a whole new, updated look and feel.
