The Top 5 Tips for Holiday Decorating
Create Your Dream Holiday Home
1. Start with a color scheme
Holiday decorating tip 1 is to choose a color scheme. It helps to give your home a cohesive and well-designed look to have a color scheme with your holiday decorations. You can go with red and green for a traditional look or go contemporary with silver and gold. It’s up to you. What color scheme goes with your home? If you have a pink room you probably don’t want to go with the red and green theme. You also don’t want to just have every color with no cohesiveness. Just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean you should forget about your home’s design and just throw up every Christmas decoration that you love.
2. Go through your decorations
Christmas decorating tip 2 is to go through your existing decorations. Either repair or throw away anything that is broken or damaged. Be tough and discerning and only keep the things that you love. Just like I say about your everyday home accessories, only use the items that you love to look at, the things that make you happy.
Make sure that everything is clean and sparkling before you put it out. I use Windex wipes as I go through everything.
And at this point you may need to shop to fill in with some updated items to add to your décor.
3. THIS IS MY BIGGEST TIP! Remove your everyday accessories
My biggest Holiday Decorating tip is to remove your existing accessories from your shelves, tables, etc., wherever you plan on adding holiday accessories. You need to make space for the holiday décor. You do NOT want to just add your holiday accessories to your existing décor. It’ll look way too cluttered and you won’t be able to see all your fabulous holiday decorations amid the other accessories.
I pack the everyday accessories into the bins that I take the Christmas decorations out of. That way when I’m ready to pack up the Christmas decorations I just take the bins back out and swap out the accessories.
4. Display collections all together.
Holiday Decorating tip 4 is to display your collections together for greater impact. If you have a collection of something, snowmen, Santas, whatever, group them together. It’ll have more impact and a make a bigger statement having them all together.
5. Be thoughtful and deliberate with what to decorate.
Holiday Decorating Tip 5 is to be disciplined and thoughtful with how and what you decorate. Remember that every inch of your home does not need to be decorated. You can add just a simple touch to each room of your home and end up with a beautifully decorated home ready for the holidays.
Add a simple green wreath with a bow to each door. Wrap bows around your existing accessories, lamps, chandeliers, and houseplants. Fill a glass bowl with ornaments and place it on your coffee table or dining room table. If you want to go an extra step, add some green branches to the bowl.
