Five Home Renovation Jobs That Should Be Left To The Pros!
Do you ever watch all those HGTV shows and think to yourself “I could do that”? Well it isn’t as easy as they make it look. While there are some remodel tasks that you may be able to tackle, most renovation jobs just aren’t as simple as you may think. We New Englanders are known for liking to save a penny. But, attempting to do a job that you’re not qualified for and then paying a pro to fix it doesn’t save you money in the long run. How many times have you tried to complete a job in your home only to have to redo it because you weren’t happy with the results? Do yourself a favor and leave these five renovation jobs to the professionals.
1. KITCHEN CABINETS
With kitchens, you really need to have a specific and exact layout that works with your space. If you’re off even a quarter of an inch with your measurements, it can really throw everything off. Trust me!! Plus when hanging your cabinets, they really have to be hung properly because they carry a lot of weight. Imagine your entire cabinet falling down with all your dishes inside? That’s not a mess you want to have in your home.
2. KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS
Kitchen countertops can be such a statement in your kitchen. And they’re usually a big investment. You really want a professional fabricator and installer because they work with stone all the time! They know how to measure, cut and install the countertop so that it fits perfectly in your kitchen. You’re going to be using AND looking at these counters everyday! You definitely want the proper material and installation.
3. TILE WORK (unless you’re a perfectionist…)
Tile installation is really an art. It can be very unforgiving. Amateur tile jobs can be spotted a mile away. You really need to be a perfectionist to have the tile look it’s best. Once it’s set, the tile is hard to remove and you will be looking at the imperfections for a long time. Plus, if not laid correctly, the corners or edges of the tile are more likely to crack or break.
4. ANYTHING ELECTRICAL & ANYTHING PLUMBING
Pretty straight forward reasoning for this one: someone could get really hurt AND you could really do damage to your house. Fires and water damage are not things you want to mess with so let the pros handle the electrical and plumbing of your home.
5. DEMOLITION
People always think that demolition is the easy part and maybe they could help out by doing the demolition themselves. Demolition should be left to the professionals FOR SURE. You don’t know what’s inside the walls. Plus, I’ve seen homeowners try to do it themselves and they end up making more work for the contractor in the end. Professional contractors usually have a careful approach to reduce waste and unnecessary damage. They know what needs to be preserved and what to remove, as well as the best way to do so. They also have a plan for getting rid of debris, which can end up being costly for your average homeowner.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t add interior design to the things that you should leave to a pro. Of course we have ways of creating functional spaces that are personalized for you and your family and are gorgeous to boot! Again I go back to the beginning paragraph when I asked you how many times you’ve done a space and then had to redo it.
