How to Create a Kids’ Room They’ll Want to Hang Out In
I LOVE working on kids’ rooms! They’re the chance to get REALLY creative and go a little outside of the box and create a space that is totally personalized. We always add some of the client’s personality into a space (more on that here), but when it’s for kids, we take it a step further and go the extra mile to really make it THEM.
So where do you start? What are they into? Let them have a part in it! If they ask for green walls, paint the walls green. It’s only paint. Just let them have it. Be open to using a brighter color than you usually would. If they’re into butterflies, give them butterflies. If they’re into superheros, give them superheros! This is the place to really have fun and get creative. Don’t be afraid to go bold. Need a little inspiration? Find out where I get my inspiration from here.
A kid’s room should allow their minds to wander and be imaginative! Use some color! The colors may vary depending on the age of the child, but for the most part, bright, primary colors are stimulating, while soft hues are calming and relaxing. For example, if you happen to have a child who is anxious, or needs a soothing space, consider using soft shades of blue, violet, pink or green. These colors are calming and can help them feel more relaxed. Colors that have a lot of pigment in them like bright red, yellow and emerald green will be more stimulating and energizing. The color is completely dependent on who’s going to be living in there! So take their lead.
If you’re daring, you can even get creative and paint a mural! Or use painter’s tape to create a design like the one above. Have fun with it! I’ve painted the ceiling sky blue with clouds on it and then stamped stars with glow in the dark paint before! It’s a great way to bring in the outdoors and they can spend time trying to find hidden pictures in the clouds! If you’re not really up for painting a mural, use decals! The sky’s the limit! They’re relatively inexpensive and you can get creative! They can transform the whole room. There are endless options with the ones you can find online nowadays, from trees, to balloons, to TV characters! They’re really easy to use and your kids will love looking at them every day. I even used a custom monogram decal in a teen bedroom. I ordered that one from etsy.com.

Another idea is to bring in a fun rug! There are so many area rugs out there for kids to learn and play on! Try a hopscotch one or a rug that has a road on it. Kids will love to drive their toy cars on it! Even if the room is carpeted, it’s ok to add a rug. If this is a baby’s room, try a flokati rug that’s nice and fluffy for tummy time! Flokati rugs are nice in a teen girl’s bedroom too! They’re super soft to sit on and read a book!
Next, you’ll want to add some fun accessories! You can get super creative and personalized by adding little touches to the room! Some crazy kids walls I’ve done (I wish I had better pictures!):
I’ve painted frames on the wall and hung frames in it for a teen girl to hang all of her friend’s pictures in!
I’ve hung a large piece of lattice on the wall so that a teen girl could hang all of her horse ribbons on it!
I’ve done a border around the top of the walls made out of round mirrors!
I’ve hung a sparkly string curtain behind a headboard and then hung a big monogram letter on it!
I’ve hung rods on the wall, hung chains from it and hung picture frames from that!
I’ve used round place mats as giant polka dots on an entire wall!
I’ve created a memo board valance on a window in a room with low ceilings!
I’ve used the fillable lamp bases from Target and filled it with legos!
If your kid loves legos, create a lego wall! Attach the large base pieces to the wall. You can use command strips so you don’t ruin it. Or, create a lego table. Use an old end table or night stand. Glue the large base pieces right to it.
Create a vanity for a teen girl. Take the desk they never use and add a piece of glass to the top. Add a BIG mirror over it with sconces next to the mirror. Attach a power strip to the side of it using command strips. Add some storage for makeup and you’ve got a new customized vanity!
If you’re designing a room for a small child, try creating a hideaway! (And grab this tip sheet for easy reference!) There’s a reason kids love forts and teepees! They’re cozy, small spaces where they can escape into their dream world. If your kid’s bedroom also acts as their playroom, why not make it fun? You can also add a kid’s size chair next to a bookshelf filled with their favorite books. They’ll love to sit there and read!
You can also add a small chair with a table or desk! Everything’s better when it’s mini! Kids love sitting at a table that’s their size. Get their creative juices flowing with a roll of craft paper and some crayons! Hang up their artwork on a piece of string with clothespins draped on the wall! They’ll be so excited to see their artwork displayed.
There are so many ways to create your kids’ room. Whatever their big dreams and ideas are, just go with it! Have FUN and make a space for them to be happy in. That’s the goal after all! You want them to want to spend time there. You want them to have their own safe, cozy space to unwind and relax.
