Top 3 Interior Design Trends for 2020 - Details Full Service Interiors

Whew, we recently returned to Western Massachusetts from High Point Market in North Carolina! And what a whirlwind business trip it was! You may have seen the pictures on our Facebook or Instagram pages. We definitely have a blast when we’re there. Not only are we there for work, which I’m talking about below, but we also have so much fun hanging out with our interior design friends and colleagues. The brainstorming that happens over wine at night can be invaluable. But, let’s get back to work…
I know what you’re thinking, “What is High Point Market anyway?” Well, it’s the largest furniture and accessories show in the world, held in High Point, North Carolina! There are hundreds and hundreds of vendors and showrooms. We spend days walking for miles just to see EVERYTHING there is to offer to our clients! We also attend, and sometimes even speak on (which I did this year) educational panels. I loved sharing my design business experience with my fellow interior designers! A BIG THANK YOU to Mydoma Studio, Surya and IDS (Interior Design Society) for sponsoring, LuAnn Nigara, of A Well Designed Business podcast, for hosting and Sara Lynn Brennan and Don Ricardo Massenburg for speaking with me!
There’s SO much to see and do at High Point Market that squeezing it into five days can be a challenge, but we do our best!
There are furniture showrooms. There are accessories showrooms. There are lighting showrooms. As an interior designer, I go there so that I can sit on furniture (do the sit test), feel the product and see the product in real life, so that I can confidently recommend it to my clients. The manufacturers display their newest furniture and accessories so that we can see what’s coming out in the next year. We get to view the new trends that are to come. It’s fun to find the similarities in the showrooms and discover what those new trends will be.
There were lots of commonalities this year, but here are the top three!

  1. TEXTURE
Lots of texture! Rattan, Rope, Caning (yup, the old 70’s stand by) and Wicker- these cool textures have been hanging around for a while now. They’re not just for outdoor furniture. We’re seeing them on indoor chairs, tables, beds, and even lighting! Textures like rope, rattan, caning and wicker can add a casual vibe to any space while also adding some visual interest to a room. Certain pieces have more of a casual feel than others. Some pieces have a beachy feel, while some are more refined and sophisticated. They’re now also being used in creative, updated applications and you can either mix and match different pieces, or just add one statement piece to a room.
See the caning below? It doesn’t feel like a 70’s chair does it? It feels fresh and new!

  1. These chandeliers below, came in really large sizes. Imagine one large wicker chandelier over a round, glass dining table. It could look really nice and add a simple, casual touch to change the entire feel of the space! Or, even these flush mount fixtures would look great in the hallway of a lake or beach house! They’d really spruce up, and soften, a space where you don’t typically have furniture and make it more interesting and fun!

  1. SMOKED GLASS
Another 70’s trend that’s back with a vengeance! Luckily, we saw it fabricated in more updated and contemporary ways than you may have grown up with! Smoked glass can create a sense of sophistication. It can be kind of intriguing as well, added to the right setting. From far away, it can sometimes appear opaque, but when you get up close you realize it’s transparent glass!

  1. Most of the smoked glass I saw was paired with brushed gold metal and sometimes natural stone. They really work well together to create some neutral, yet interesting pieces of furniture. Some of the smoked glass items even had a “glam” sort of feel to them, almost acting as jewelry in some rooms!

  1. This rejuvenated trend may not be for everyone, so we’ll see if it sticks around! In fact, we took a poll on our Facebook page and it was not a big hit. www.facebook.com/detailsfullserviceinteriors
  1. BLUSH
The color Blush! This trending shade has been showing up for the past few years and is still going strong. I saw it in so many showrooms on all different items. It wasn’t just seen as color on walls, it was used in lots of accessories like bedding, furniture, draperies, artwork, etc. It can add a fun and soft pop of color to a room. Now, I’m NOT a pink person. I don’t usually lean toward it when decorating. You might be thinking that blush is too pink and feminine. But you know what, in the right amount and on the right piece, it could act as a neutral! We’re using it in a master bedroom remodel right now. We’ve got it paired with soft grays and whites. Stay tuned to our Portfolio for that reveal.

  1. If you wanted to make a bolder statement, paint your ceiling blush and use the same color sofa! This living room pairing is bold but still soft and inviting! It can be great to push the envelope and go out of your comfort zone with color sometimes. It could end up being your favorite room in the house! 1. Nice trend report, Wendy! I love all the textures, could do without the smoked glass…probably because I lived through it the first time LOL, and I love that pink ceiling! In fact when Ben Moore announced their color of the year was the soft pink, First Light, my first thought was “that would make a great ceiling color!”

  2. Thanks for the insight! I love those chandeliers. I am not a fan of pink but may come up with a design with that color to see what I can do with it that I love. The smoked glass I think could look great in the right design.

    1. I’m not a big pink fan either. But, I may be able to do this soft blush. In fact I am contemplating doing a master bedroom in that color.
