5 Things EVERY Room NEEDS!
Sometimes you keep buying furniture and accessories, decorating your room, and it still doesn’t feel right. And, you’re wondering what is missing.
There are a few things that I add to EVERY room.
It could be that you’re not adding these 4 things to your rooms.
Try adding them, yes; all of them and then see how it feels.
Every room needs –
- Something Soft and Textural –
It could be something made out of fabric, or fur or whatever you like that’s soft and adds some texture. It could be a rug or a window treatment. It could be something as simple as a pillow or even a throw. Who can’t throw a cozy blanket over the back of a chair? Easy, right? Every room, even kitchens, need something soft to ease the harsh edges provided by the four walls and the furniture and/or cabinets. Even bathrooms need some softness with a rug, a pretty shower curtain, towels or window treatment.
- A plant –
Every room needs some life that a plant can bring. It could be a green plant, grasses or sticks, or it could be fresh flowers that you buy every week when you do your grocery shopping. If you think fresh flowers don’t last long enough to justify the investment, try alstroemeria, which can live up to 2 weeks. Plants add life to your room. Plus, they’re great for filling up empty corners or coffee tables. If you kill houseplants, like me, try a pothos plant. The only way to kill this one is with too much water. So all you have to do is put it in a spot without too much sunlight and water it when it looks like it’s about to die. That’s it. Every room needs some life and plants are the way to do it.
- Light –
Of course, every room needs light, right? But it’s important to add different types of light. If you have a ceiling fixture that provides general lighting you still need lamps to add task lighting. And lamps add warmth to a room when strong, overhead lighting isn’t needed. Plus, lamps are a fun way to add a little bling and personality to a room. Take a walk through the HomeGoods lamp aisle. There are so many fun choices.
- Sparkle –
Every room needs a little bit of sparkle. Now that doesn’t mean you need glitter and super blingy. It just means that you need some reflective items, some glass and/or shiny metal. If you don’t have anything that shines and/or sparkles your space ends up looking dull and, maybe, a bit boring.
- Personality –
Who lives there? When someone comes into your home they should learn something about you by looking around. Every room needs a little bit of your personality. Where do you like to travel? What are your your hobbies? You can show this with artwork that means something to you, maybe of a favorite vacation spot, or by adding your favorite color to the room. You can do it with photos of family and friends. You can even add personality with items you’ve collected on your travels. But be careful with this one, less is more. You don’t need 76487483 snow globes to tell people you love winter.
#DecorateWithWhatMakesYouHappy
Look at the room below. It’s one that I designed and decorated. You’ll see that every one of those 5 things is in this room – Something soft and textural (rugs, draperies, upholstered pieces), plants, light (both overhead and lamps, sparkle (glass and metal in accessories, glass on the lamp and drapery finials) and personality (in the accessories chosen for the built ins). See? It pulls the room together!
So look around your home. Do your rooms have these 5 things? If not, you may be having that feeling like something is missing. They’re really inexpensive, easy things to add. Remember, decorating your home should be fun. Decorate with what makes you happy!
