Putting Together the Perfect Room in 8 Easy Steps
The Process of Making a House a Home
So you have a house.
Now what?
You need to make it a home.
But, there are all these rooms and you don’t know where to start.
Should you buy furniture first?
Should you paint first?
What about area rugs? When do you get area rugs?
You have so many questions that you’re paralyzed.
So you do nothing and you end up with a bunch of empty rooms that you hate.
It doesn’t have to be that hard.
Here are the 8 easy steps that I follow to put together the perfect room.
- Empty the Room
- Decide on a Wall Treatment
- Choose your Furniture
- Choose & Install your Area Rug
- Install your Furniture
- Add Lighting
- Install your Window Treatments
- Add the Art and Accessories
Step #1 for Putting Together the Perfect Room
Empty the Room
Start with a blank slate. If your room is full of junk you don’t like you can’t see the forest for the trees.
If you can’t empty out the entire room, at least empty out as much as you can.
Step #2 for Putting Together the Perfect Room
Decide on a wall treatment
Whether it’s paint or wallpaper, you need to consider what’s going to be on the walls. And, it’s easies to paint or wallpaper when your room is as empty as it can be, right?
If it’s paint you have 2 options –
Choose a neutral color that acts as a great backdrop and fades into the background.
Or, choose a bold color that is showcased in something else in the room. Maybe it’s in your bedding, or maybe it’s in a throw pillow or some artwork.

The 15 MORE guide even has painting tips, 5 of my favorite trim colors, a sheen chart (so you know where to use semi-gloss and where to use satin) and 6 BONUS colors that are great for accent furniture.
Step #3 for Putting Together the Perfect Room
Choose your furniture pieces
Notice I said choose, not install. You want to have your furniture chosen so you can move to step 4, but you don’t want it installed because you won’t be able to complete step 4.
Measure out your room.
Be sure you’re filling up your space properly, not so large that you can’t move around easily and not too small so that it looks like a small island floating in a large sea. You can even use painters tape to tape out the furniture on your floor so you can see how it’ll fit.
Step #4 for Putting Together the Perfect Room
Choose and install your area rug
Choose a rug that is large enough to accommodate the furniture you’ve chosen. If it’s your bedroom be sure the rug extends out on the sides of your bed at least 18” on each side. If it’s your living room make sure it’s wider than the sofa and end table combined. For more rug sizing help you can go to – https://www.detailsfullserviceinteriors.com/guide-choosing-right-area-rug.
Step #5 for Putting Together the Perfect Room
Install your furniture
Once your rug is in its proper place, layer on your furniture, arranging it with at least the front legs of the furniture on the rug and in close enough proximity to each other for easy conversation. Start with the larger pieces, sofa or bed, etc. Then add in the smaller pieces, like nightstands or accent tables.
Step #6 for Putting Together the Perfect Room
Add lighting
Whether you have a ceiling fixture or not you need lamps.
You don’t want to have the overhead lighting on all the time. Very few people look good in just overhead lighting! Add lamps next to your bed and on at least one end of the sofa. You can also add accent lighting on artwork or plants, later after Step 8.
Step #7 for Putting Together the Perfect Room
Install window treatments
You need to install your window treatments before your artwork because if you use drapery panels they’re going to be high and wide, right?
Remember that they should be hung at least as high as half way between the top trim and the ceiling, on the outside of your window trim and to the floor. No excuses.
No floods.
I guess you could puddle them if you want some added drama, but I’m not a drama girl so I hang them ¼ of an inch above the floor.
Step #8 for Putting Together the Perfect Room
Add the Art & Accessories
Now that everything is in place you can see where there are some empty spots that need some personality. This is when you decide on some accent colors too. Add some throw pillows. Add some accessories on your coffee table. And, add some artwork.
Have some fun here!
Show who you are!
People should get a feel for your personality by walking into your room.
Are you formal and refined?
Are you a traveler?
Are you bold and daring?
Show it in your artwork and accessories.
Your artwork and accessories do not have to be added to your room all at once. Take your time and wait until you find things that are really ‘you’.
By following these 8 easy steps you’ll create a home that you and your family and friends will love to spend time in one step at a time.
